New Initiative Supports Mental Health Among Muslim Youth in Oslo

A new initiative launched in Oslo this week aims to address mental health challenges among Muslim youth in Norway. The program, developed in collaboration between local mosques, mental health professionals, and the Norwegian Directorate of Health, offers culturally sensitive counselings services and peer support groups.

Organizers emphasize the importance of tackling mental health stigma in religious communities. “Many young Muslims feel caught between cultures. They may experience identity crises, family pressure, or discrimination — all of which impact their mental health,” says psychologist Dr. Farah Elmi, one of the project’s advisors.

The initiative includes workshops on emotional wellbeing and training for mosque leaders to recognize signs of mental distress. Early reactions from the community have been overwhelmingly positive, with many parents expressing relief that such services are finally accessible and inclusive.
